Huatulco's dry season is as beautiful as the rainy season. Although the jungle vegetation looses its foliage and the landscape turns from lush shades of green to brown and gray, the contrast of the landscape with the edge of the ocean is dramatically beautiful, and the blue of the water seems to intensify.

Wildlife is much easier to spot as the protection that the lush jungle provides, is minimized during these months.

Today's morning walk provided us with lots of blue hues to enjoy.- The regal plumage of a Magpie Jay, the iridescent wings of a Dark Purple Wing butterfly, the soft blue sky behind a flowering Flamboyand tree, and the magnificent ocean and sky at the edge of the jungle near Santa Cruz Bay.

Two new restaurants worth visiting in Huatulco, are Soñadores and Cafe Juanita.

Soñadores ( Gardenia #1301, corner with Palma Real ), serves international cuisine in a casual yet polished setting. With just a few tables in the outside patio by the sidewalk, the atmosphere is excellent for taking in a bit of Huatulco’s scene while enjoying a savory pasta dish or a fresh salad with a signature house dressing.

Cafe Juanita just up the street on Gardenia St. is a new charming cafe, offering healthy saldas and a variety of baguettes. Flavorful yet healthy choices are available to dine in, or for delivery. Beer and wine are available. Proprietor Jane keeps a watchful eye over the kitchen to ensure freshness and consistency.

The colorful cafe offers a book exchange program, and wi-fi connection. A great addition to Huatulco’s restaurant scene!

Angel Butterfly

The local name for the amazing White Morpho Butterfly ( Morpho polyphemus polyphemus ), is Angel. It is the perfect name for this beautiful creature that appears out of nowhere gliding through the air with ease and elegance, and has a wingspan of approximately eight inches.

This week, three of them have graced our garden, and a couple more were spotted in the quiet road behind our neighborhood, that leads to the golf course in Tangolunda Bay.

They fluttered in our presence for a few seconds, and then just as magically they disappeared back into the lush jungle leaving us with a joyful sense of peace and wonderment.

After traveling ten months a year for my job, it's a bit stressful going home to big city living. I recently booked a trip to Huatulco on a whim for some rest and relaxation. A week a Casa Tulco was all I needed. The town and the beaches were what the doctor ordered, but house itself was relaxing enough for me to get refreshed. Great trip. Great accommodations. I can't wait to go back again!

It is so hot in Texas with record setting days over 100 degrees F. I need a break from the oppressive heat. I think the beaches in Huatulco will do the trick. I am booked to be there later next week. Also, I just ran across some great rates to Huatulco from both Dallas and San Antonio at $330 RT and $359RT, respectively. Almost cost me that much for a round trip from San Atonio to Dallas recently. I cannot wait. Artiste.

Birds of Huatulco

One of our morning walks brought a special surprise when we happened upon a Colima Pigmy Owl’s nest.

A Black-vented Oriole decided one of the palm trees by the pool was the perfect source of fibers for its beautiful nest, so for days, CasaTulco’s guests have watched as he laboriously picks at a palm frond pulling long thin pieces of fiber, one at a time, and then flies to a protected tree across the street from CasaTulco to weave its fabulous home

A pair of Rufous wrens have been building their nests in CasaTulco’s cactus garden.

Wildlife in Huatulco is always abundant, and never more evident than during the rainy season. The end of May brings the first rains the jungle sees in many months, and with it, life springs anew in many ways. The foliage that was completely lost during the dormant season becomes green and abundant in a matter of days, and the birds and butterflies seem to multiply all around us.

This June, we have had several wonderful storms that have brought much needed water to the jungle around CasaTulco. Most likely we will see a few more rain storms during the first part of July, and then again, the clouds and the sound of spring water will be a memory once again until next year’s wet season.

Amazingly enough, the jungle will remain green for many months and the wildlife that depends on it, will find a way to survive the long dry stretch ahead.

During the past few weeks, we have been fortunate to have enjoyed the visit of many of Huatulco’s endemic bird species, as well as several migrant ones that make Huatulco home for a few months every year.
